Preparing for Your Blood Test

There is no special preparation for most blood testing. If special preparation is needed, your doctor will instruct you on how to prepare for your test. Your doctor will also provide you with a form called a "requisition." The requisition lists the blood tests ordered for you. Be sure to bring this form with you the day of your test.

Please note the following important guidelines:

  • For Triglycerides, Lipid Panels and Glucose Blood Tests you must fast for 12 hours prior to the blood test. "Fasting" means you willnot be able to eat or drink anything except water 12 hours before the test. You may resume your regular diet after the test is completed.

  • For a 3-Hour Glucose Tolerance Test (3-Hour GTI), please call to schedule the test:

    When You Arrive

Please check in at the registration desk before your test. After you have registered, your doctor's requisition will be processed and you will be called to have your blood drawn.

We work as quickly as possible to ensure that your lab work is done accurately and in a timely fashion. There may be delays, however, if other patients require immediate attention. Our staff will keep you informed of any delays.

    Test Results

We will work closely with your physician to ensure that test results are communicated promptly and accurately. Results of routine blood tests are sent to your doctor within 24-48 hours. Some tests may require processing by an outside laboratory. Those results are usually read within 7-10 days.

    When You Go Home

  • You may remove the clean gauze pad after the test. There may be some mild brusing around the puncture site.

  • If you are taking blood-thinning medication, we will apply additional pressure to the puncture site. You may go home once the bleeding as stopped.

  • Call your doctor if you notice any increased bleeding, bruising, pain or swelling at the puncture site when you return home.
