Each year approximately 700 thousand people experience a new or recurrent stroke, making stroke the number one cause of disability and the number three cause of death in America today. Stroke, also known as cerebrovascular accident, if identified early, can be medically or surgically treated with great success and many patients who receive early treatment have no residual affects from stroke. Additionally, persons who experience a "warning” or "mini-stroke" with stroke-like symptoms but no lasting damage, called a transient ischemic attack (TIA), can decrease their risk for experiencing a serious episode by recognizing and treating TIAs through outpatient intervention. Receiving service at a JCAHO Certified Primary Stroke Center from highly trained specialists greatly increases the chances of full recovery.
Using stroke protocols, guidelines and order sets, our dedicated Stroke Team physicians examine patients seeking services for cerebrovascular accidents within minutes. And physicians needing urgent patient referral or transfer for brain aneurysm or intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) can easily access the members of our comprehensive stroke team through our Acute Stroke Team paging system. The paging system is available 24-hours a day and we respond in minutes.
The Stroke Care Center professinal staff is part of the Physician Foundation at California Pacific Medical Center (PFCPMC), a not-for-profit medical foundation.
